When we send a file via email attachment or upload a file to a certain website, we sometimes receive an alert that the file size is too large to send or upload. If this happens, you can use FileOptimizer, a file size optimization tool, to compress and optimize the file without affecting its functionality.
First, download and install FileOptimizer, which is a bit large, about 70 MB, because it integrates many file support plugins for different formats, mostly free and open source, and is constantly being expanded and updated. This allows us to optimize a variety of file formats, such as commonly used graphics, text, sound and video format files, as well as EXE, compressed files, etc.
Start the software, add the file and start optimizing. If there is one or more PDF e-book file, we feel that its file is too large and needs to be optimized. At this point, click FileOptimizer’s “File → Add files” command (or Shift + Ins key combination) to add files. If you need to deal with the files all at once in the same folder, you can also choose “File→Add folder” command (or Ctrl+Ins key combination) to add (Figure 1). After the files are added, execute the “Optimize→Optimize all files” command (or Ctrl+O key combination) to optimize and compress the files in the window.
PDF documents in the resolution of the picture on the file size of the greatest impact. Therefore, if you feel that the effect of PDF file compression is not ideal, you can also adjust the resolution settings, and then compress the line to obtain more desirable results. Execute the “Optimize→Opinions” command, in the pop-up settings window to the right to scroll the tab, find and click the PDF tab, in the Profile drop-down list, you can choose the resolution used to compress. If the resolution in the list is not what you want, you can also enter a custom resolution through the Custom DPI option. Select Skip layered to also skip the processing of layered PDF pages, so you can get better compatibility (Figure 2).
If you want to optimize the processing of other formats of documents, the method is basically similar to PDF optimization. Only in terms of parameter settings, different file formats have different characteristics, optimization settings can be selected according to the actual situation.
In addition to the optimization of a variety of documents have their own different parameters set, but also through the FileOptimizer software to set the global compression level. Under the General1 tab of the Options settings window, the Optimization level selection list allows you to choose the dynamic relationship between compression speed and compression quality, with Fast being the fastest but lowest compression level and Best being the highest but slower (Figure 3). In addition, through the Process priority drop-down list, you can select the priority level of the compression process, so that you can adjust the balance of resource usage between file compression and other tasks of the system, which is more flexible and convenient for performing multi-task compression.
FileOptimizer can be used not only for our daily email attachments or uploading files for weight loss, but also has practical use for webmasters, web developers, desktop application developers, mobile application developers, server administrators, content creators, etc.
