Software recommendation: create mobile version of Windows 10 system

Usually, our Windows 10 system is installed to the hard drive inside the machine for use. For emergency maintenance or mobile work, sometimes it is necessary to create a Windows 10 system installed on a removable disk (including flash drive or USB removable drive) that can be carried around. As you know, the feature of creating a Windows To Go mobile system disk is only available in Windows 10 Professional Edition or above, so how to create a mobile system for Windows 10 systems that do not have this feature?

1. WinToUSB create mobile Windows “old”

Before the release of WinToUSB software, Windows users did not have third-party software to create a Windows To Go mobile system disk. In other words, WinToUSB is the first software that can create a Windows To Go mobile system disk from the image of Winodws OS. The software supports all versions of Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10.

Creating a Windows To Go removable system disk with WinToUSB is quite easy, we just need to browse to the prepared Windows ISO file, then select the target USB drive and start creating a Windows To Go removable system disk (Figure 1).


2. Download image and create mobile system with Rufus

In our article “5 minutes to fix UEFI+GPT installation”, we have introduced the method to create Windows installation boot disk with Rufus software ( In fact, Rufus software can not only create Windows installation boot disks, but also Windows To Go mobile system disks. If you use a higher version of Rufus (e.g. version 3.8), you can even use the software to directly download the ISO installation image file of Windows 10 or Windows 8 from Microsoft’s website. As we know, previously, if you use Rufus software or other creation tools to create Windows installation boot disk, you need to prepare Winodws ISO installation image files in advance, and these files either need to log in to Microsoft website with Microsoft account to download, or need to download through other authorized developers’ websites, but now we can use Rufus software to avoid these Now we can use Rufus software to avoid these troubles.

To get Windows ISO installation image files with Rufus 3.8, you have to click the “Download” option on the “Select” box to the right of the “Boot Type” box of the software. ” option. Next, the software will automatically check the validity of the latest ISO image files for Windows 10 and Windows 8 on Microsoft’s website, and then it will give you a download selection dialog box from which you can choose the Windows version you need and click “Continue” to perform the download operation (Figure 2).


After downloading the Windows ISO installation package, select the downloaded ISO installation package in the boot type selection box, and then select Windows To Go from the “Image Options” list. In the “Devices” list, select the USB device drive to be used to move the Windows system. Finally, click the “Start” button to make Windows bootable and usable from the removable disk (Figure 3).


3. Partition tool “doubles” as a mobile system drive creator

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition (free) is one of the many free utilities available for managing Windows 10 disk partitions. In addition to disk management tools, the software also offers a tool called Windows To Go Creator that makes it easy to create Windows To Go mobile system disks. Like WinToUSB and Rufus, AOMEI Partition Assistant is compatible with all versions of the currently popular Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10.


Install and launch AOMEI Partition Assistant Free 8.4, and click “All Tools→Windows To Go Creator” in the wizard bar to launch the Windows To Go creation window. After that, choose whether to create from the image file disk or ISO, or from the existing system, follow the wizard to select the target disk and perform the creation operation (Figure 4).

4. ISO2Disc Simple Windows Mobile System Creator

If you prefer a simple creation tool, then ISO2Disc software is another good choice, it does not have as many options as the above mentioned Rufus software, besides selecting the USB drive, Windows ISO file, and then selecting the partition type (GPT or MBR) to start creating the USB boot disk, there is also an option to enable the creation of Windows To Go Mobile System Disk feature. However, it is important to note that the option to create a Windows drive does not appear when you select Windows 7, Vista or Windows XP ISO file. You need to select Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 ISO image files to enable the Windows To Go Drive option (Figure 5).


5. One Drag and Drop Create a Mobile System with WiNToBootic

Wintobootic is another freeware that was also originally released to create bootable Windows USB boot disks, but the latest version 2.2.1 also allows creating Windows To Go mobile system disks. To use it, simply drag the ISO source file to the green arrow in the software interface first, select the target disk drive letter and finally click the Do it! button and follow the prompts to select the Windows To Go option to create a mobile Windows system (Figure 6).
