Creating a list using the leader dot tab in Microsoft Word 2019

Have you ever needed to type a list that consists of leader dots—dotsthat separate, for instance, a name and a telephone number, or an itemand a value? This topic will go through the steps to create a list usingthe leader dot tab.

  1. Type the name of a staff member, a child in class, or a client tothe left of a new document in Word 2019.
  2. Locate the Tabs dialog box.
  3. Set the following options in the Tabs dialog box: Tab stop position: 15; Alignment: Left; Leader2……., demonstrated in the followingscreenshot:

  1. Click on the Set icon.
  2. Click on OK to confirm, andexit the Tabs dialogbox.
  3. Position the mouse pointer directly after the name of theperson.
  4. Press the Tab key on the keyboard. Once you have donethis, a leader dot tab will appear, as in the followingexample:

  1. Type the birth date of the first child, or a telephone number or anamount, and press Enter. The result is shown in the followingscreenshot:

Is your birth date wrapping to the next line, as in the precedingexample? If so, here is how you fix it:

  1. Click on the birth date.
  2. Launch the Tabs dialog box.
  3. Click on the tab stop in the box below Tab stop position.
  4. Change the Alignment option to Right, as illustrated in the followingscreenshot:

  1. Click on Set.
  2. Click on the OK button to committhe change.
  3. Type a new line under the existing text, remembering to pressEnter after you have typed the name of the second person in thelist, then type the date. The result is shown in the followingscreenshot:

It is very important to note that tabs are set on a line in a Worddocument. When pressing Enter to move to the next line, anytabs set on the preceding line will travel with the entry tothe next line.  Always check the ruler bar for signs of any tab markersso that you are able to remove them, to continue typing normally in adocument.

Always select the entire tabbed list when making changes to a list.Failure to do so will result in tabs set on individual lines and not tothe whole list, and will thus cause complications.
