We keep all kinds of files on our computers. However, over time, one of the problems we face is that there are more and more duplicate files on the hard drive. These duplicate files are quickly eating into the storage space and becoming difficult to manage. But don’t worry, today I’m going to introduce the software that can quickly find and delete duplicate files.
Easy Duplicate Finder is a handy piece of software to find duplicate files. It has an intuitive interface. And the steps to use it are very simple. It supports to scan files, pictures, documents, audio, video, EMAIL, photos, contacts, even Google Drive, and Dropbox. It recently launched the all-new EDF 7. It’s a lot different from EDF 5.
The new version has a faster speed of scanning and less memory consumption, but the downside is that it supports only a few common scanning modes. The older version supports all 13 kinds of scanning modes, but is relatively slow and takes up more memory. Another thing to note is that if you’re using the latest Mac OS Catalina and Big Sur, you’ll have to use EDF 7. In the end, of course, which one you choose depends on your needs, and both versions can be installed and used on your computer at the same time.
Here are the differences between EDF 7 and EDF 5:
• Faster scanning
• Faster duplicate management
• Reduced memory consumption
• Mac OS Catalina and Big Sur support
• Better performance on Windows and Mac
• Not all scan modes are currently supported
• Slower scanning
• Slower duplicate management
• Heavier on RAM
• No Mac Catalina and Big Sur support
• Slower general performance
• Supports all scan modes
WHAT I LIKE
• Supports scanning popular file types
• Provides various options to handle detected duplicates
• Powerful search engine performs quick duplicate checks
• Intuitive interface
• The search options are very flexible
• Provide “undo” for emergency recovery
WHAT I DON’T LIKE
• Sometimes fails to detect the duplicates
• $39.95 per computer is a bit expensive
• The free trial only allows you to scan up to 10 groups for each scan
What is the Easy Duplicate Finder?
As the name suggests, Easy Duplicate Finder is an easy-to-use application for finding duplicate files. It mainly helps us to quickly clear all kinds of duplicate files, including documents, pictures, music, iTunes library, videos, emails, and even contacts. Easy Duplicate Finder is different from other duplicate removers in that it supports scanning duplicate files in Google Drive and Dropbox. The interface is so intuitive and simple that you can know how to use it for the first time. But that doesn’t mean it’s not powerful enough, actually, more flexible features hide in the Settings panel, which contains a lot of fine-tuning options, and you can scan and filter files more carefully to accurately clear duplicate files you don’t need.
Is Easy Duplicate Finder free?
No. Easy Duplicate Finder offers a free trial version. You can use it for unlimited scanning, but only allow you to clear up to 10 duplicate files for each scan. So after you’ve tried Easy Duplicate Finder and feel like it meets your needs, you might as well upgrade to a paid version. After all, we have far more than 10 duplicate files. The paid version costs $39.95 a year per computer.
Is Easy Duplicate Finder Safe?
If this is the first time you’ve heard of Easy Duplicate Finder, you’re probably not quite sure about the program’s security. But as far as I know, Easy Duplicate Finder is one of the better-known software of its type, so its security can be guaranteed. At the same time, I scanned the software with various security software like Kaspersky, found that there is no virus or malicious code. If you still have questions, you can do the scan yourself.
On the other hand, are the scan results of the software accurate? will it accidentally delete our files? After my tests, its result is very accurate in most cases. It can find duplicate files very accurately, so there will be no accidental deletion of files. It also gives you the option to delete, move, or rename duplicate files without having to delete them immediately. Of course, the safest way is for you to back up the files first and then clean them up.
Who does Easy Duplicate Finder apply to?
Easy Duplicate Finder is suitable for most users including office workers, writers, students, or designers. As long as you need to clear a lot of duplicate files quickly and don’t want to waste time removing them manually. This is the right tool to help you manage them more efficiently.
A Detailed Review of Easy Duplicate Finder
After launching the Easy Duplicate Finder, you can see that the top half of the screen has two box areas. The one on the left is used to add folders or disks that you think have duplicate files, and the one on the right is used to exclude folders you don’t want to scan.
Moreover, here is a good design that every time you move the mouse over a button or an area of a feature, it gives you a hint about what the feature does or how to do it.
You will also notice that the lower half of the screen can be set to specify or exclude the file types scanned and the maximum or minimum size of the file. The software has a built-in grouping of all the common file formats. Of course, if you don’t find the file format you want to filter, you can add it manually.
In the upper right corner, there is a drop-down box that selects scan mode. It is important to note that EDF 7 and EDF 5 have a significant difference in this option.
EDF 7 directly lists the three modes of file scanning in the drop-down box, namely SHA256 + FileSize, Byte-by-Byte Comparison, and Filename only (fast Scan). In EDF 5, there is only one option, which is File Search. Of course, EDF 5 also supports these three different file search modes, but it needs to be tweaked in Settings rather than displayed in the main interface.
The main differences between the three modes are their scanning speed and the accuracy of detecting duplicate files. In most cases, SHA256 + FileSize will suffice. However, if you need a particularly fine-grained filter, Byte-by-Byte Comparison is the best choice, but it’s important to note that this pattern is much slower than the other two.
Duplicate file scan
After adding a folder containing duplicate files, you can click Start Scan. The scanning speed varies depending on the number of files and the mode selected.
In my test, I scanned thousands of files here, and it was done almost in a few minutes, so to speak, very fast.
After the scan is complete, if you trust the software’s scan results, click Remove All Now to directly remove all duplicate files. This is not recommended if there are any important files. It’s better to click Go Fix Them and check the results marked as duplicate files. By the way, here’s an interesting option: Open Assistant. This tool will guide you through some quick filtering of duplicate files to clear them.
However, this feature only lists three commonly used options, which are included later in Step 3, and more options are provided in Step 3, so this option is more user-friendly but of little practical value. Besides, if you need to deal with a huge number of files and you do not have enough time right away, you can also click the Save Scan button to save the scan results of this time for processing next time.
Ok, let’s Go Fix Them, and then we’ll go to the Step 3 tab. This screen lists the details of all the duplicate files scanned. The files are grouped, and each group contains both the original and duplicate files and their grouping numbers are the same. Duplicate files are checked by default, you can click the corresponding file to preview to determine if it is duplicate files. The upper-right menu bar then provides a set of buttons to quickly filter specific files, such as archives, documents, music, pictures, videos, and more.
Then there are four buttons in the bottom right corner to quickly filter files, process scan results, delete duplicate files, and undo operations. It’s worth noting that the first time I used this quick filter option, I didn’t understand the filter option very well, so it might be confusing for the novice.
Duplicate songs scan
For the ones who like to listen to music, there must be a lot of music files stored on the computer. If you are using different music services at the same time and sync music files between different devices serval times, you may end up with a lot of duplicate music files, which can take up a lot of disk space and make it difficult to manage music files. Imagine if you created a playlist with lots of duplicate music files, the player will play the same song again and again. How awful would it be?
You can add all the music folders and scan them using the default filter. Note that the software filters music files only by title and artist by default. This way, it may leave out some music duplicates , such as the same song from different versions and the same song with slightly different titles. So if you need to filter the duplicate music files more accurately, you can click on the audio fingerprint in the Settings to scan. This takes a little longer time, but it also allows you to find duplicate music files more accurately and avoids deleting substantially different music files.
If you’re a music lover or editor, this is a handy tool to handle a lot of audio clips and audio tracks to reduce unnecessary space usage. It can also make your music library very organized. Most common music formats are supported, such as MP3, AAC, M4A, FLAC, WAV, RM, MIDI, etc.
Duplicate photos scan
We may have a large number of photos on our computers from different sources, whether the ones we took, shared by friends, downloaded from some online sites, or the ones created by ourselves. If we sync these photos frequently between different devices and do not manage them properly, the computer may produce a large number of duplicate images. We can also filter and delete these photos by using Easy Duplicate Finder.
Besides, for the older Mac, there is a particular mode called iPhoto Scan. Instead of deleting duplicate photos, the software moves them to the recycle bin in the photo library. So if you want to get rid of the files completely after deleting duplicate photos, you can do so in the recycle bin.
Duplicate contact scan
With frequent communication, we may have a large group of contacts. As we import and export these contacts multiple times, the contact list may produce multiple duplicate contacts. I know this from experience. Every time I change my phone or computer and import contacts, I find that all of my contacts appear with two identical ones. They won’t occupy too much disk space, but it slows me down every time I need to find someone’s contact information. Then I use Easy Duplicate Finder to try to clear these duplicate contacts. The results are still very good. It successfully found all the duplicate contacts. But contacts are so important to us that before you delete them, it’s always a good idea to check each one for duplicates before deleting them.
Duplicate email scan
I get a lot of emails at work every day, especially since I use Outlook mostly. I haven’t done the math directly, but I can estimate that there are at least a few thousand emails in my inbox. And lately, I’ve felt that too much E-mail has slowed Outlook down. I also found a lot of duplicate e-mails. Although I’m not sure what caused it, it affected my management of email.
So I’m going to use Easy Duplicate Finder to filter out duplicate emails. But the results of the first scan were not particularly satisfying, because I found that the messages marked as duplicate in the search results were slightly different: the recipients of the messages were not the same, even though their content was the same. But over the course of several uses, I found that the default setting was to retrieve only the sender’s name, subject, and the contents of the message, so it’s no wonder that the first scan was problematic.
So if you want to scan an email, you can check the options “To” in the Settings. If you need to, you can check all the options, which will almost guarantee that the scan results are very accurate.
We may often need to copy some folder to another folder, and modify the files in the copy folder, however, you’re not quite sure what files are duplicate over time. To check the duplicate files one by one, it will be a waste of time. So if you just want to clear the duplicate query for two folders, you can use the Easy Duplicate Finder’s folder comparison mode to filter those duplicate files.
The application treats all files in the copy folder as duplicate files and files in the source folder as original files, so it does not delete the contents of the original folder.
Cloud Storage Scan
One important feature that sets Easy Duplicate Finder apart from other similar software is cloud storage file scan mode. It supports Google Drive and Dropbox. The principle is simply that the software will ask you to log into the cloud account, then it will automatically get the metadata of all the files in the cloud storage and scan. It should be noted that this mode is greatly affected by the network, so if there are a lot of files in the cloud space, it is better to run this mode under a good network connection. The advantage is that you don’t need to download the files from the cloud and scan them, and you don’t need to manually sift through them online. It makes sense to clear duplicate files of cloud storage space, which is expensive after all.
Settings and Options
With Easy Duplicate Finder, you can get most of your tasks done with the very little extra setup. But there are more subtle options hidden in the Settings panel. You can go to Settings to make various tweaks, such as file search, and you can choose to skip temporary files, system folders, or zero-size files. Then for the music file filter, the default is to filter by title and artist. In the Settings, you can also select album, track, year, genre, and bit rate. You can even choose to do an accurate scan with an audio fingerprint, and you can adjust the sensitivity of the audio fingerprint. There are also settings for address books and mail filters.
In general, Easy Duplicate Finder is a very comprehensive and easy to use tool for cleaning up duplicate files. It supports a wide range of scan types that meet almost all requirements. In particular, its cloud-space scanning mode is a bright spot. The accuracy of its scanning algorithm is commendable, at least in my use, it almost completed all the tasks I expected very quickly. Although I have used other products of the same type, there are more or less some defects that do not meet my needs. However, this software is a little more expensive, and if you don’t need to clear duplicate files too often, you can try some free products.
