System hacks: even delete with pressure to free up more space for the system

Sometimes, while using your computer, you may run out of space in your system partition. In this case, if you use common optimization tools to clean up the junk and uninstall some unused software, and you still run out of space soon afterwards, you can try to find more free space for your system partition by using various compression methods.

When there is a space crunch on the system partition, first clean up the junk files and selectively turn off some features. These include: cleaning up temporary files and cache, cleaning up system log files, reducing the space occupied by virtual memory, turning off the restore function and cleaning up restore point files, turning off the hibernation function, deleting unused programs and components, etc. In addition, you can use file moving, including user folder and software folder transfer (can be achieved through system settings or third-party software).

1. Use the system compression program compact.exe

First of all, we can use the system’s own file compression program, compact.exe, which is located in the “Windowssystem32” folder of the system and is designed to display or change the compression status of files on NTFS partitions. After using this program to compress any file in the system partition, the original file name will not change, in today’s increasingly high configuration of the use of computers, do not feel the obvious changes (some older computers may feel a little slower), while the file size can be greatly reduced. We can use the program both to compress folders or files in the system partition, and to compress the entire system partition.


For example, if you look at the folder properties and find that the Users folder on the system partition is the main reason for the space hogging, you can use the above-mentioned program to perform a targeted compression of this folder. To do this, simply boot to the administrator’s command prompt window and execute the following command to immediately start the compacting operation on the Users folder (Figure 1).

compact /C /S:C:Users


In addition to compressing specific folders, we can also compress the entire system partition. Before compressing, you can use the following command to check the current compression status of the system, if it is already in a compressed state, there is no need to perform compression (Figure 2).

compact /compactos:query

If the system partition is uncompressed after the query, you can execute the following command to compress the entire system partition.

compact /compactos:always

Tip: If you want to turn off the system compression, you can execute the command “compact /compactos:never”.

2. Compressing with NTFS folder properties

We can also compress the folders in the NTFS system partition through the “Properties” window of the folder. To do this, right-click on any folder in the system partition and select “Properties”. In the folder properties window, click the Advanced button in the General tab. In the Advanced Properties dialog box, check the “Compress content to save disk space” option under the “Compress or encrypt properties” group, and OK it (Figure 4).


3. Compress system files with third-party tools

If you find the above commands complicated and difficult to remember, or find it a bit troublesome to set up folders one by one through properties, you can also compress partitions or specified folders with the help of the Live File Compression component included in a third-party software, Advanced Uninstaller PRO.

First launch Advanced Uninstaller PRO software, click File and Registry Tools in the left column, and then click Live File Compression in the right column (Figure 5).


Then, in the Add window that appears, add the files, folders or partitions to be compressed one by one by using the Add file, Add folder, Add drive, etc. buttons, and click the Next button when you are done.

After that, the software starts to perform a one-time batch compression on the selected partition or folder. After the compression is completed, a compression report is given, showing the number of files compressed, the capacity before and after compression, the total compression amount, etc.

4. Clean up your system with third-party DISM++ tools

After using some system cleanup tools and the above compression methods for the system partition, there may be some chance to get back more space. Because the general cleanup tools may have missed, we can use the “DISM++” tool to do further space recovery processing. After running the software, first select the system you need to deal with in the toolbar below the menu bar (if there are multiple systems, they will be displayed here), then click “Space Recovery” under “Common Tools”, check all the contents on the right side, and perform a scan. Click the “Clean” button to get as much space as possible (Figure 6)


Extended reading: We can also take the system partition expansion method to “borrow” space, this method requires tools to carry out, borrowing space from other partitions, the operation has a certain degree of danger, the system partition can be damaged, resulting in the system can not boot and data loss tragedy, so need to be engaged in caution. It is not recommended to use this method in general.
