Hard drive has a bad channel how to do two ways to temporarily save lives

Now that SSDs are so hot, partners are more willing to buy machines and upgrade their storage money to SSDs, which inevitably makes our mechanical hard drives overdue for service. Now many of the earlier mechanical hard drives have exceeded their shelf life, some minor problems began to appear, the most common of which is bad channel. Once the bad channel appears, the noise of the hard drive is getting louder and louder, error warnings are non-stop, very annoying, I provide two quick ways to deal with it here, let it quiet down first.

Windows itself comes with the ability to detect and handle bad sectors on your hard drive. Take Windows 10 as an example, right-click on the hard drive partition icon, select “Properties”, click on the “Tools” tab, and click on the “Check for errors” item in the “Check” button in the “Check” item.

Because Windows 10 itself is monitoring the operation of the hard drive, when performing the check, if a problematic partition has been monitored the repair option will be displayed directly. The repair time depends on the size of the problem and the number of bad sectors on the hard drive, but it is much faster than testing and repairing before entering the operating system, so it is recommended that you test and repair as soon as you feel there is a problem.

In the detection and repair of problematic partitions, if the system prompts that there is indeed a bad channel, then even if Windows prompts that no problems were found, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive test of the other partitions of this hard disk, because hardware bad sectors may affect multiple partitions, and if the physical damage to the disk surface, read and write may also scratch the head or expand the area of damage, early detection and shielding can avoid storage errors, but also to prevent the head to continue to read and write this area.

Alternatively, if you are partitioning with third-party partitioning software or happen to have these partitioning tools on hand, you can use them to perform a detailed inspection of your hard drive to find and shield bad sectors as well. Take DiskGenius for example, select “Disk – Bad Channel Detection and Repair”, then directly disk, click “Start Detection” and it will inspect the entire hard drive surface and determine the health of the sectors.

After a full inspection, select “Try to Repair”, two warnings will appear, which is the biggest difference between this repair method and Windows’ own repair. It does not automatically rescue and repair the data, and may even affect the data near the bad channel, while Windows will “rescue” the files saved as CHK files, which can be recovered by some software.

In these two types of detection and repair methods, Window comes with repair is more “gentle”, leaving more opportunities for everyone, and compatibility. DiskGenius is a bit more “violent”, it eliminates the bad sectors outside of the partition, almost no more head reading and writing, the effect is better. This partition is more complex and may have compatibility issues, so be sure not to use other partitioning software to operate.

Regardless of which method is used, if the hard drive has physical bad sectors, it is likely that more and more bad sectors and errors will appear later on, and the life of the hard drive will basically come to an end. So after using these two methods to temporarily “renew” your life, or hurry up and back up your data and get a new hard drive.
