Inserting and modifying section breaks in Microsoft Word 2019

Breaks in a document are extremely useful if you would like to have adifferent layout or formatting changes for a certain section of thedocument, a page, or pages. By formatting or layout, we meanmargins; paper size or orientation; page borders; verticalalignments of text; headers and footers; columns; page numbering; linenumbering; and footnote/endnote numbering. The following isan explanation of these special break types:

  • ContinuousA continuoussection break is inserted before and after a portion of text on the samepage. Changing text into columns is an example of where a continuousbreak is used:

  • Even Page or Odd PageThis prepares thedocument for formatting changes on all the odd pages only of thedocument or only on all the even pages throughout the document. Youmight like to place a header or footer on only the odd pages in thedocument, and therefore would insert an odd page sectionbreak:

  • Next PageThissection break being inserted instead of a normal page break (before andafter the page) will control what happens on that page only. This typeof section break is very useful when you want to create portrait pagesfollowed by one landscape page, and thereafter the document returns toportrait mode. Another use for this type of break is to sort out aproblem table that is too big to fit on a portrait page!
