Language teachers often choose to print out some of the best essays online for student reference, but most of the articles downloaded online using conventional Word style, this layout printed out not only poor reading effect, but also not easy for students to count the number of words. We can convert the ordinary typesetting style in Word to the composition book square style, view it very intuitive.
To achieve a grid style similar to the composition book (one character per grid, including punctuation), we can add a separator (such as a tab) after each character in the original article, which can be achieved with the “Find and Replace” function.
Click “Start → Replace”, locate “Find Content” in the window that opens, expand the “More” option at the bottom, and click “Special Format → Any character” (i.e., find all characters in the text, including punctuation). Then locate “Replace with”, click “Special formatting → Find content” as above, and click “Special formatting → Tabs” again (i.e. find any character using “Find content + tabs” to replace), and finally click “Replace All” can be (Figure 1).
Figure 1 Find and Replace
After completing the replacement it will add a tab after each character in the article, but this is only one tab before each paragraph, but still does not meet the paragraph at the beginning of the “empty two spaces” habit. The same operation, continue to “find the content” in the “^ p”, “replace with” in the “^ p ^ t “, you can add a tab in front of each paragraph, thus adding two spaces before each paragraph of text.
Now select a full line of characters and view the number of characters below, for example, the author here to show 19, that is, a line can display a maximum of 19 characters (can only be inserted into the 19 list cell). Select the full text, open the “text into a table” window, “the number of columns” set to “19”, “text separation position “Select” tab “and finally click” OK “button (Figure 2).

This way all the characters are automatically inserted into each cell and the beginning of each paragraph are empty two cells. In order to get a better display, we can also adjust the cell width, row height parameters. In addition, you can also insert the number of words at the bottom of each page, such as 20 × 19 (indicating that each page is 20 lines × 19 columns, a total of 380 characters), easy to view and statistics on the number of words in the article (Figure 3). If you do not want to print, but need to view directly in Word, should also be set to not show paragraph marks.
