How To Make A Perfect Loop Gif

Whether it may be an animation, short video, or even a compilation of various images, perfectly made Gifs that run in an infinite loop are indeed a delight to watch. Many illustrators, graphic designers, and editors have been making these short seamless clips from over a decade since Gifs blew up among many communities on the internet.

But, many people still question how they can make a perfect loop gif? If you are also one of those people trying to figure out how to make an infinite loop gif, then this article might have all your questions answered.

What color palette should you go for in a loop Gif?

While creating your loof gif, also go for a simple color palette. Never make it too complex or detailed because, with a complicated color palette, you can lose the quality of the gif during the uploading process. Plus, the length of gifs is usually very short, and they only pass through the viewers’ eyes for just a matter of seconds. So it is best if the gifs are refined and are made up of a pleasing to the eye color palette.

Tell a story

A lot of thinking goes into creating an eye-catching loop gif. Since you can not put sound in a gif, so you have to narrate your audience the story through the gif itself. Put some time thinking the story you could tell through the gif before even starting the gif-creation process. In fact, thinking of a ‘story’ is a vital part of the gif-creation process. Once you get hold of a good story you can use to communicate with your audience, start working on the animations according to it and make sure to create your animations subtle with the story you will narrate in your gif.

What dimensions should you keep of your gif?

What are the ideal dimensions for a gif? This question is asked a lot. Honestly speaking, there is no hard and fast rule that you should follow while defining the dimensions of your gif. Usually, the best practice is to design the dimensions of your gif according to the instructions of the platform that you are going to post it on. You can find the ideal dimensions of that particular platform on Google. These guidelines keep changing with time, so it is crucial always to keep yourself updated.

Bonus tip: if you are creating a gif for a client, ask him about the dimensions he is looking for in his project.

Keep A Clear Agenda

As I said earlier, telling a story is important. However, while telling your story, you should have a clear agenda in mind. Always know if you are trying to convey your story to the audience, promoting a product or service. The more clear your agenda is, the easier it will be to engage the audience. Having a clear agenda should be a must in your gif.

How To Create A Gif Loop Using Adobe Photoshop

The easiest way to create loop gifs is by using adobe photoshop at least for me. In this way, you can also create them seamlessly by abiding to this easy-to-follow method to the very end.

Step 1: Make The Start The End

What I mean by making the start the end is put the start of the illustration at the end so a seamless pattern can be created.

How you can do that is by,

  1. Take your time indicator to the starting portion of your video. For instance, if your video is 8 seconds long, take your indicator to the 2 seconds mark.
  2. After bringing the time indicator to the starting portion, click on the split at playhead tool situated on the left stripe of the screen.
  3. Split at playhead tool will split your video into two segments.
  4. Bring the first segment that is on the top to the start and align the end of the second segment that is on the bottom with the end of the first segment by moving it forward.
  5. Now the first segment will start where the second segment will end.

Step 2: Add Transition

Most of your work is done right now. All you have to do is now add a transition between the two segments.

Here is how you can add transitions,

  1. Drag and drop the fade tool of Photoshop, where the first segment ends.
  2. Now click on the transition that you just dropped on the first segment and move the cursor until the second segment. Now the second segment will be fully covered by the transition from the top.
  3. Like I said before, it is important that the transition matches the length of the second segment.

Step 3: Play The Video

Now just play the video, and you will see the gif being played in a seamless loop. Turn loop playback on to make it play in an infinite loop.

Step 4: Export The Video

Now that you have created a perfect loop gif, it is now time to export it. Usually, it is better to render the video in high resolution, but as I stated earlier, always check the requirements of the platform, you are going to post it on. Mostly, social media platforms will scale down your high-resolution gif anyway, and you could be asking for trouble if you did not preview your video in low resolution before, so always keep the requirements a high priority.

It is essential to pay close attention to all of the little details explained above while creating your loop gif. Always go for a simple but subtle approach. It is the key to making an excellent, engaging gif. The Adobe Photoshop method to create gifs is arguably the easiest one out there, and even a beginner can also follow this simply explained step-by-step approach.
