System Hacks: On-Demand Folder Viewing I Make the Call

In order to view and organize files, we often make special settings for how to view folders, for example, we are used to using thumbnails to view picture folders, and we like to use lists to view documents, and for folders with a mix of documents and pictures, we have to use different sorting methods to display them according to actual needs. However, Windows 10 system does not set the appropriate viewing method by file type by default, we need to manually set a more intelligent viewing method.

On-demand settings for more useful file viewing

Since different file types require different viewing methods, we can set them specifically as needed. For example, to make it easier to view and organize JPG photo files taken by digital cameras, you need to set the file viewing method of the JPG photo folder to “Supersize icon”.

Open the folder where several JPG pictures are saved, click “View→Large Icons”, then click “View→Options”, and in the pop-up window, click “Apply to Folder “, and when the popup “Do you want all folders of this type to match the view settings of this folder?” appears, click “Yes”. Click “Yes” when it appears (Figure 1).

In this way, as long as all JPG images are saved in a folder on your computer (which cannot contain other types of files), the way it is viewed will automatically change to “SuperSize Icons” when you open it (Figure 2).

When we have finished the above operation, the view of this folder will be written to the registry and saved. If you want to export and set the view mode, please check and backup the corresponding keys in time, please refer to the section of “Live registry, more personalized view mode” later.

Apply to folder function is set according to the type of file saved in the folder, so we can also pre-set the folder by saving multiple types of files, and then apply it to the same type of folder subsequently. For example, I exported images in Word by saving the document as “(web page *.htm,.htm)” and then extracting PNG images from the html folder. This often requires the folder view is set to the icon, grouping based on set to “by type”, in order to facilitate the extraction of PNG files. Now to let the system in such folders to achieve the above specified view and sorting methods, as prompted first to save a Word document containing graphics as “1.html”, placed on the desktop (Figure 3).

Open the desktop “1.files” folder, follow the prompts to view and group based on the style set to their needs, and then the same implementation of the “Apply to Folder”. So that later, as long as the other Word save as htm files, open the corresponding folder of htm files, where the files will automatically be set in accordance with the style of sorting, we just copy the PNG file to extract pictures (Figure 4).

In short, we just need to save a specified type of file in a folder according to our needs, and then execute “Apply to Folder”, so that the same type of folder view will be automatically applied to the pre-set style when saved on the computer in the future.

○Use the live registry to view in a more personalized way

Since the folder viewing method will be automatically written to the registry after the setting is completed, we can achieve the backup of the viewing method by exporting the registry keys after completing the above settings to facilitate the recovery after system reinstallation. For example, after completing the view settings in Figure 2, immediately start the Registry Editor and expand to “HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags “, under which to view the subkeys with the largest number of bits, such as the author’s computer is “Bags468”, that is, the largest three-digit subkey is 468, where the saved is the key value of the JPG folder view mode, remember this key value (Figure 5).

Right-click on the “468” subkey and follow the instructions to export it as “html view 468.reg” and save it in D:. This way, when the system is reinstalled, you can quickly restore the folder view by importing the registry file. Of course, we can also set up multiple viewing methods for certain types of folders, and export the corresponding key value REG files to the desktop after the settings are completed, so that you can switch the viewing methods whenever you import REG in the future. In addition, you can also combine with the system schedule task, to achieve a regular change of the folder view mode. For example, for the picture folder, you can set it to be viewed as “medium icon” during the day and “super icon” after 19:00.

First, set the view mode of the image folder to “Medium icon”, and then export the corresponding key value to “d:day.reg”. Delete the key value and set the view mode to “Super Icon” again, then export the key value to “d:night.reg”. Start Notepad and enter the following code and save it as “d:1.reg”.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags471]

The code is meant to delete the specified key value, and here we assume that the key value is 471 when it is finished. start the task schedule, set a task to run every day at 18:59 and 19:00, and run the programs “reg import d:1.reg” and “reg import d:night.reg”. This way, at the specified time each day, the picture folder view will change to the oversized icon. To restore the icon setting task, just import day.reg (Figure 6).
