Software recommendations: PS pixel effects to create summer passion

Pixelation, that is, turning an image into a dotted composition, the mosaic effect that you usually see more often is a pixelation operation, which turns the image into a small square of dots. But the mosaic is still, the following we will not only pixelate the image, but also produce the effect of outward burst, creating a kind of heat effect.

First of all, in Photoshop (this article to the CS5 version as an example) to open the image to be processed, it is best to choose the background is relatively simple picture, if the background is more complex, you can extract the figure through the selection tool in Photoshop, placed in the white background (Figure 1).

To create the pixel burst effect, you need a little more space to work with. Press D to quickly revert to the default foreground and background colors (i.e., pure black foreground and white background), and then press Ctrl+Alt+C to bring up the “Canvas Size” dialog box, positioning the blue block represents the current image location, the arrow represents the direction of expansion, this example to expand the canvas to the right, so the positioning box is placed in the left position. Then enter the expanded value in the width, OK (Figure 2).

Tip: When you press a shortcut key for a single letter in Photoshop, the input method must be English input, otherwise the command may not respond to the execution.

In the Layers panel, right-click on the current image layer and select “Duplicate Layer”. In the pop-up dialog box, give the duplicate layer any name you want (e.g. “People”) and make sure you have two layers. We will only work on the duplicated layer. This is for backup purposes, so that we can quickly revert to the original state if the subsequent results are not satisfactory (Figure 3).

Press the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Alt+N to create a new blank layer, we want to create a custom brush on this layer. First press M to select the Rectangular Selection Tool, then draw a rectangular selection in the blank layer, note that while drawing the selection hold Shift, so as to ensure that the drawing is a square. Then next press D to restore the default color, and then press Alt + Delete key, you can fill the square selection with black.

Immediately after the implementation of the “Edit → Define Brush Preset” command, in the dialog box that opens for the new brush specify a name, such as “Square Brush”, click “OK” when finished (Figure 4 ).

Now in the Layers panel, drag the brush layer you just created to the trash box icon at the bottom, release the mouse button to delete the layer, and press Ctrl+D to cancel all the selections. Next, press B to switch to the Brush tool, then press F5 to bring up the Brush Settings panel, click to select the new square brush we just created, set the size to 70 pixels, and adjust the spacing to 50% (Figure 5).

Then check and switch to the “Shape Dynamics” item on the left side, and set the size dithering to 75% and the angle dithering to 90% on the right side, with the controls set to “Off” (Figure 6).

Click the menu button in the upper right corner of the brush panel, select “New Brush Preset” from the pop-up menu, check the “Capture Brush Size in Preset” item in the dialog box that opens, and then a new 70 pixel large preset brush will be generated (Figure 7).

Press Ctrl+S to save the image, then close the Brush panel. Next, press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+N again to create a new layer named “Outbreak”. Press S to select “Imitation Stamp Tool”, click on the toolbar to expand the “Brush Preset”, select the brush created above, in addition to the opacity is set to 100%, the sample is set to “current and below the layer ” (Figure 8).

The next operation and the usual method of using the imitation stamp tool, first press the Alt key and click to select the starting sampling point, and then click randomly around the character, you can generate the shape of the size and angle of the square point, draw the effect of the outbreak can be.

Finally, add motion effects for the outbreak of pixel points, select the “outbreak” layer, and then execute the “Filter → Blur → Motion Blur” menu command to open the Settings dialog box (Figure 9), adjust the appropriate angle and distance, preview the effect is good, click “OK” to get the final effect, and finally save the picture on it (Figure 10).

Tip: If you are not satisfied with the pixelated effect of the outbreak, you can resize the brush directly in the brush preset. Increasing the brush can increase the randomness of the shape size of the point, and vice versa can reduce the random effect. Also you can press F5 to bring up the brush panel and reset the brush shape (e.g. change to round), shape dynamics and other items, but this needs to be saved as a new brush to work.
