Although there are many ways to share files nowadays, each method has its own limitations. For example, if you do it via instant messaging software, you need to be friends with both parties before you can do it. If a network drive is used for transmission, there are speed and other limitations for ordinary users. Therefore, sometimes temporary sharing platforms may be more practical.
Traditional File Sharing Types
Usually we don’t need much of a file sharing platform for file sharing, so traditional file sharing platforms are very suitable, and WeTransfer is one of them. WeTransfer offers both free and paid sharing plans for web users, with the free plan supporting uploads of up to 2GB. All files will be stored on the server for 7 days, after which they will be automatically deleted.
First, we open the official WeTransfer website (https://wetransfer.com/) through your browser, click on the “I agree” button and then click on the “add your files “button. In the pop-up dialog box, select the files you want to share. The sharing platform allows users to select multiple files at once for uploading. Since the default sharing platform is to share files via email, we need to set the recipient’s email address, the sender’s email address and the message information after we finish uploading the files. Once all the settings are completed, click the “Transfer” button to complete the corresponding sharing operation (Figure 1).
Tip: If there are multiple users who want to receive the file, then you need to use the English semicolon to separate their email addresses.
When the other party receives our sharing email, click on the email to see the download link of the shared file and the name of the shared file (Figure 2).
After clicking on the share link, click the “I agree” button in the dialog box that appears, and you will see the list of shared files. Users can download each file individually by clicking on the button behind each file, or download all files at once by clicking on the “Download all” button at the bottom. In addition, the sharing platform can also be used to share files via links. First, click the button at the bottom left corner of the sharing dialog box, and select the “link” option in the “Send as” pop-up page. After uploading the file, you will get the link to share the file (Figure 3). Send the link to the friend who needs it, and then you can share and download the file.
Sharing files using chat rooms
Although the WeTransfer sharing platform can solve many users’ problems, the biggest problem with this sharing platform is that it can only perform file delivery operations in one direction. This means that users can only passively receive files from the sender, but cannot actively ask for the files they need. So if you want to interact with users in a timely manner, how should you do it?
The first step is to open the Volafile website (https://volafile.org/) and click on the “Create Room” button on the main page of the website, which will create a temporary chat room (Figure 4).
Now share the link to this chat room with other users, and when they open the link through their browsers, they will be taken to the temporary chat room we created. This chat room is divided into two parts, the left side is the chat area between users and the right side is the file sharing area. Enter your desired text message in the bottom left corner of the page and enter to communicate with the other users in the chat room.
If you want to share a file, first click the “Upload” button in the upper right corner of the page. The uploaded file will appear in the list of files on the right side, so that other users in the chat room can see it. The sharing platform displays the type of file in front of each file through different icons, and when the user moves the mouse over the icon, the basic properties of the file are displayed in a pop-up dialog box, and if it is a multimedia file, it can be previewed online (Figure 5).
If a user uploads a lot of files, then it must be troublesome for other users to find them. However, we can filter all the files by clicking the file type button on the top of the list on the right, so as to narrow down the scope of the file search. Of course, you can also set the keywords of the file name in the search box directly behind it, so that you can search for it directly. By default, all files uploaded by users are saved for two days, but as the creator of this temporary chat room, you can not only delete the specified files, but also extend the sharing time for some files.
III. Uploading files immediately after downloading
If some users use the sharing platform to transfer files for convenience, then some users may first consider the issue of security, after all, some of the files transferred include some more important information. So how should you choose a sharing platform in such a case?
First, we open Fileio’s official website (https://www.file.io/) through a browser, and then click the “Upload” button on the webpage to select the files to be shared. Next, once the file is uploaded to the cloud server, the file sharing link will be automatically generated (Figure 6).
This sharing platform has two distinctive features, firstly, the browser will automatically start the file downloading operation after the user clicks on the download link, unlike other sharing platforms that require the user to make corresponding clicks. Secondly, all the links can only be downloaded once, and once the user finishes downloading, the file and link will be deleted by the server immediately, which can ensure the safety of the file.
Of course, users can also open Dropfileto’s official website (https://dropfile.to/) through their browser. The sharing platform supports uploading files up to 1GB in size, and all uploaded files are saved for 24 hours. Once the file has been uploaded, a share link with an access code is created so that users can download it only if they have the access code (Figure 7). It is important to note that the default share link does not require an access password, but rather the user must add a “+” to the default share link, such as https://dropfile.to/joEKWCX+, to require a password.
