Stand on the shoulders of giants – PPT production imitation

For those who are new to PPT design, it is helpful to often refer to and learn from some excellent PPT works to improve their design level. But reference and borrowing are not just simple “fetishism”, there is a lot of learning in it. The following author will share some experience and skills in PowerPoint 2019 as an example.

○Elementary imitation

Directly applying the template is the easiest way to imitate it. After starting PowerPoint, click “File→New” and enter keywords in the search box, such as “Year-end Summary”, you can find many templates (Figure 1).

Click the desired template, and then you can load it into the PPT for use after downloading. If the built-in templates of PowerPoint cannot meet your needs, you can also download templates from some websites, and the common template websites are

1. Microsoft’s official PPT template website, the template quality is very high and completely free

2. template resources are abundant and basically free

3. produced by Slidor, with beautiful templates and many resources

Firelink: The article “Make PPT cooler Template websites to help” in Issue 8, 2021 of this publication also introduces several other good PPT template websites, which interested readers can also refer to.

It should be noted that some templates provided by these websites use a master design, and some elements in the template (such as logo, banner title, etc.) cannot be modified directly. If you want to modify them, you need to click “View→Slide Master” after importing PowerPoint, and then enter the edit master page to make changes (Figure 2).

After applying the template, we can also modify some elements of it as needed. For example, the template shown in Figure 3 uses two triangle-like shapes at the top and bottom to represent different occupancy ratios. If you find the shape a bit abrupt, you can change it to another shape (Figure 3).

Select the proportion of 70% of the shape, click “Edit Shape → Change Shape → Hollow Arc”, change to Hollow Arc and hold the yellow dot on the shape, adjust the size, position and direction of the arc shape. Then copy a copy placed below, and adjust it to 30% of the position, so that the template shape changes are completed (Figure 4).

For elements such as icon coloring and font design, we can use tools such as “color picker” and “format brush” to quickly refer to them from the template.

○Advanced imitation

The method introduced above is mainly based on the template to operate, and after mastering certain skills, we can also manually imitate some excellent posters, advertisements, web pages and other designs, so as to improve the hands-on ability, but also to deepen the understanding of the work. For example, the following picture is a website released a real estate poster, mainly by the “bottom picture + the upper and lower two triangle mask + three-dimensional effect of the boat” composed of its structure, color scheme are very personalized. Here we will imitate the poster as an example to illustrate the relevant operations (Figure 5).

1. Make the bottom image

Create a new blank version of the slide, insert a picture of a boat sailing on the sea (the boat picture from the “” website, free for commercial use), assuming it is Picture 1. Then make a copy of Picture 1, assuming it is Picture 2, and then right-click Picture 2 and click Then right-click picture 2 and click “Picture Tools→Remove Background” to extract the boat as a background-free picture (assume picture 3) for backup (Figure 6).

Next, copy Image 1 to the clipboard, and then click “Insert→Shape→Rectangle” in turn, insert a rectangle and resize it. Then right-click the inserted rectangle and select “Set Shape Format → Fill → Picture or Texture Fill → Clipboard” to fill the picture 1 into the rectangle as the underlying background element.

2. Make a triangle mask

Insert a right triangle and resize it, place it on top of the rectangle, and then fill it with a similar gradient color, referring to the color scheme of the original poster. Then insert another rounded rectangle, use the “color picker” tool to extract the color of the scroll in the original poster and fill it, then adjust the position and size of the rounded rectangle, and use it as the scroll element of the right triangle. The same operation as above, insert another right triangle at the bottom of the slide and set the corresponding settings (Figure 7).

3. Set the three-dimensional effect

Select Picture 3 in the window shown in Figure 6, cover it to the top of the slide shown in Figure 7, and overlap the boat in Picture 3 with the boat in the original picture. Then click “Start→Select→Select Pane” in turn, and adjust the position of the boat layer in the right pane, so that the picture 3 is located above the triangle mask. Finally, then add the appropriate text. After this operation, the effect is not very good? (Figure 8).
