Software recommendation: the person to person management system Hosts file

The Hosts file in the system is a very important file, through which many network-related operations can be performed, such as domain name resolution or ad filtering, and so on. However, it is very troublesome to manage this file, and sometimes it is interfered by system permissions. In fact, for different environments of network users, we can take different methods of modification, so as to facilitate the management of the Hosts file quickly.

Multiple Hosts files quickly switch

Since there is only one Hosts file in the system, users write all the information to this file, which causes great inconvenience to the management. To better manage the content of this file, we can use the SwitchHosts software to split the content of the Hosts file into several files.

First, download and run SwitchHosts (https://github.com/oldj/SwitchHosts/releases), unzip it and run the executable file in the folder directory. To facilitate better operation later, we first click on the “Preferences” command in the “File” menu. In the pop-up dialog box, select the “Simplified Chinese” option in the list of “Custom commands”, and finally click the “Set and relaunch” button. “button, the interface of the software will be changed to Simplified Chinese (Figure 1).

Through the list on the left side of SwitchHosts, we can see three different options. The “System Hosts” option is all the information of the current system’s Hosts file. If the user modifies the content of the “System Hosts” option, the original Hosts file will be displayed. “Backup” option. If you do not want to modify the original Hosts file, you can set it directly in the “My Hosts” option. When we click on the line number in front of each line in SwitchHosts, the software will add an explanation symbol in front of the line so that the line will lose its effect. Once the editing is complete, click on the switch after the option name to activate the content of the option. The user can activate only one of the options or as many different options as needed (Figure 2).

Tip: For editing the finished Hosts content, we can click the “Export” command in the “File” menu to back it up, so that it can be quickly imported into the software after reinstalling the system.

Creating a new Hosts file

In addition to the default three options in SwitchHosts, we can also click the plus button in the lower left corner of the list on the left side of the window to create new Hosts options according to our needs in the pop-up dialog box. For example, we know that some users regularly publish some Hosts rules to perform domain name resolution, ad filtering and even malicious website blocking operations. Therefore, we can subscribe to the corresponding Hosts rules, just like the ad filtering software subscription rules, so that the corresponding information content can be updated regularly.

First, in the pop-up “Add Hosts Rule” dialog box, select the “Remote” button, and then set a name in the “Hosts Program Name” input box, for example, we Here we set it to “Malicious Website Blocking”. Next, enter the URL address of the web link to be updated by the rule in “URL Address”, and then select an update time in the “Automatic update” list, usually 24 hours is enough (Figure 3). Finally, click the “OK” button, so the software will automatically download the content of the rule from the network and create a new option in the window list.

Let Hosts run in the sandbox

Hosts is a very important file in the system, and all network software needs to comply with the contents of this file. However, sometimes we need to test the Hosts information, so we only want the web browser to comply with the contents of the Hosts file, but do not want other web software to use the relevant content, which requires a rather cumbersome operation. This problem can be solved by using the tool “Multiple-host”.

First of all, download and run the latest version of “Multiple-host” (https://github.com/liyangready/multiple-host), which can be used to set the information for the common browsers Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. browsers. However, by default, the tool operates according to the default installation path of the browser. Then you need to click the “Settings” button in the left list, and then follow the prompts to modify the launch path of Google Chrome and Firefox respectively and save it (Figure 4).

Next, click the “Proxyhost” option on the left side of the tool, and in the right window we will see a default virtual sandbox environment. Double-click the name of the environment to set the required Hosts rule information in the dialog box, and finally click the “Save” button to save the operation (Figure 5). Next, we click the “New Environment” button to create a different Hosts file for better management of the information content. Then click the “Start using” option on the left side of the tool, select the type of browser you want to use at the bottom of the right window, and then click the button in the middle of the window to let the browser use the set Hosts content information to operate (Figure 6). Since our common Hosts information is stored in the virtual sandbox, there is no conflict with the system’s Hosts file.

Tip: If you are not satisfied with the above two software, you can also try the software “Hozz” (http://blog.zhangruipeng.me/Hozz/). Its specific functions are similar to SwitchHosts, so I won’t introduce it here.
