Using Protected View in Microsoft Office 2019

At times, you will find a message on the screen indicating that thereis a problem with the file and that it will be opened in read-onlymode (Protected View).This disables editing in the workbook you are trying to open. As thereare many reasons why this could happen, the document can only become atrusted document again once you decide that it requires editing and youwholeheartedly trust the file.

To open a file in a different mode, follow these steps:

  1. Open Excel and click on the File | Open tab.
  2. Locate the file you wish to open by choosing Browse—for this example, we will usethe ChoclatoFlakSales.xlsxworkbook. 
  3. At the bottom right of the dialog box, you will find various optionsfor the opening of the file.
  4. Click on the drop-down arrow next to Open.
  5. Choose the Open in Protected View option, as illustrated inthe following screenshot:

  1. If ProtectedView is selected, the following error will appearbelow the ribbon and on the title bar:

  1. If you trust the file, click Enable Editing below the ribbonto continue working on and editing the workbook.
