Office hacks: Word 2016 to quickly create a mind map

Widely used in learning, writing, communication, and presentation, mind mapping is a revolutionary thinking tool that efficiently disperses thinking. With the help of graphics and text, the relationship of all levels of subject matter branches are represented in a hierarchical diagram of mutual affiliation or correlation, allowing us to form systematic habits of learning and thinking. Today mind mapping has reached all levels of life, helping us to learn more efficiently, think more clearly and give our brains the best performance. In addition to using professional software, Word is also a good choice for drawing mind maps.

SmartArt to do mind mapping quickly

The biggest advantage of Word to make mind maps is the versatility, easy to modify and easy to share. Use Word2016 in the SmartArt graphics, a combination of modifications, you can quickly make a practical mind map (Figure 1).


open Word2016, switch to the “Insert” tab, click the SmartArt graphics pop-up dialog box (Figure 2), select the “Separate Rays”, click “OK “button can be inserted into the page, in turn, modify the text inside for the content of the mind map. If you feel that the branch is not enough, you can right-click the circle and select “Add Shape → Add Shape Behind”, then you can see that the branch will be added automatically.


Right-click the middle of the circle and select “Change Graphics” under “Rounded Rectangle” (Figure 3), at this time the middle of the graphic is modified to a rounded rectangle, where the appearance of the graphic can be modified, and the added text can be modified font, color and font size. Right-click the outer frame of the SmartArt graphic and select “Surround Text → Float Above Text”, so that the graphic can be dragged around the page to adjust the position.


Select the SmartArt graphic, switch to the “Design” tab (Figure 4), where you can modify the appearance of the graphic, for example, set the 3D effect, change the color; in addition, right-click on the graphic and select “Set Shape Format”, on the right side you can make more detailed and personalized retouching of the graphic. In addition, right-click on the graphic and select “Set Shape Format”. Switch to the “Insert” tab again, insert a SmartArt graphic named “Vertical Box List”, enter the required text, and then set the graphic’s “Wrap Around” to Then set the “Wrap Around” of the graphic to “Float Above Text” so that the graphic can be moved around.


Press Ctrl + D to copy the graphic 3 copies, modify the text and placed in the appropriate location; switch to the “Insert” tab, click “Graphics” and select “Arrow”, draw an arrow, copy and rotate the direction, used to connect (Figure 5). Switch to the “Start” tab, click “Select → Select Pane”, you can see all the objects in the current page, press and hold the Ctrl key, respectively, click “Select Pane” in all the objects, so you can select all the elements of the mind map, and finally right-click to select the “combination” under the “combination”, you can combine all the elements into a whole.


Hand-drawn graphics to do personalized mind map

With SmartArt graphics produced by the more orthodox mind map, in Word can also draw graphics by hand and add pictures to create a personalized mind map, as shown in the following example is completed by adding markers, graphics filled with pictures, retouching arrows, etc. (Figure 6).


Switch to the “Insert” tab, click the “Graphics” button and select “New Drawing Canvas”, drag to adjust the size of the canvas to ensure that the elements added later can be placed. Draw a rounded rectangle on the canvas, right-click and select “Set Graphic Format”, click “Fill and Line” on the right side, select “Picture or Texture Length of Day”, and then click “File” to select a picture to fill. Click “graphics” and select “curve arrow connector” (Figure 7), draw a curve.


Right-click the curve and select “Set Graphic Format”, set its “Width” to 4.5 pounds, “Composite Type” to “Double Line “, then press Ctrl + D to copy 1 copy, move to the appropriate location, and then switch to the “Format” tab, click “Rotate Object” and select “Horizontal Rotation “(Figure 8), so as to get a symmetrical line.


Draw an ellipse, right-click the ellipse and select “Add Text”, enter the required text; in setting the shape format, the border will be “double line”, switch to “Text Options”, enter the “Layout Properties” (Figure 9), check the “Do not rotate the text”, the left and right margins are set to 0 cm; then copy the ellipse, modify the text inside; finally select the lines and ellipse, it will be combined into a whole branch.


Make three copies of the combined branches, and rotate them horizontally, vertically, 90 degrees, etc. through the “Rotate Object” option, so that these branches are arranged around; switch to the “Insert” tab, click the “Graphics “button to select the” markup “under the” rounded rectangle markup “(Figure 10), draw the sub-branch under the graphics box, and then enter the text, in the left side of the” shape format You can modify it in “Shape Format” on the left side. Finally, add other branches by copy and paste, so that a purely “manual” mind map is done.


It should be noted that: the production of mind maps in Word is not much technical difficulty, can use SmartArt graphics, try to use SmartArt graphics for the combination; in the production process, to make good use of copy and paste, rotate the object, select the pane, format brush and other tools, these can significantly improve the production speed; if the branch of the mind map needs to be aligned, you can also enable If the branches in the mind map need to be aligned, you can also enable the “grid lines” under “View”, as well as the “alignment” function in “Format”. Of course, if you want to make the mind map beautiful, in addition to the selection of graphics with color, you also need to add the right picture or even background, which depends on the creativity and aesthetics of the maker.
